KumDo means "the way of the sword." Spiritual maturity, inner strength, calmness of the soul, and pure heart combined with strength and speed are what define KumDo. Being able to use sword effectively is known in Korean as Kum Sool. However, the martial art of KumDo is more than this. It is on ancient sword art that focuses on the development of the mind through its Oriental Philosophy, as well as the use of sword. Through the development of the mind, KumDo helps its practitioners to achieve greater self-confidence, self-respect, and integrity. It is not enough to be skilled in the sword to be a good competitor, but also a KumDo (good person). A good person shows loyalty, honors his or her parents, is trustworthy, has patience, and is confident in all things. KumDo helps its practitioners not only in becoming a skilled swordsman, but also in becoming a KumDo. In other words, KumDo helps to become the best person that you are capable of being.
